all about the wedding

thekiss.jpg

Larry Michael Mitchell and Elizabeth Jaclyn Schmitz were married on the 31st of July 2004 at 5 in the evening. The ceremony was held at a quaint, stone chapel with large vibrant stained glass windows and dark wood beams.  Danforth Chapel is on the University of Kansas hill, in Lawrence KS.  The reception was held at the Union Pacific Train Depot also in Lawrence.  We had some friends form a jazz band for us, a giant cake, and some really loud trains passing.  We were married during the Harvest moon, it was all very picturesque.

We went back home for two weeks before the wedding to pull together those millions of loose ends, and also to see our friends Morgan and Chris get hitched as well.  There was about four weeks worth of work to do however.  Everything turned out fantastic.  Larry and I really wanted to have a very personal ceremony, so we asked a friend of ours, Michael Gehmilch, to perform the nuptials.  It was very touching...and exactly what we wanted, personal.  Not to mention quick.  We could only get the chapel for two hours, for setup, ceremony, and cleanup.  My parents were generous enough to rent the reception hall for the entire day, so early morning before the ceremony we all loaded in to the depot and decorated.  I just couldn't let someone else decorate for my wedding...it wasn't gonna happen...I was doing it or no-one was! But we had a lot of help.  Larry's parents brought friends that really pitched in and my friend Marjie came to help.  And of course the rest of the family all rolled up their sleeves and put up with a demanding picky bride for a few hours.

I was a very unconventional bride.  Because of that, there were a lot challenges, one of which is ongoing (I still have not found a wedding band that tickles my fancy).  We really wanted to be "hands on", so I made my petticoat, veil and decorated my shoes, Larry designed and made the guest book and programs, together we designed the invitations and I did most of the construction on the invites, my dad made a HUGE lattice archway that we covered in vines and lights and my mother and gradmother worked their fingers to the bone gathering decorations from various collections.  So we poured a lot of blood into the preparations, and they were worth every bit.  I felt so special and unique.  Our wedding coordinator couldn't use a lot of her "stock" because I am too damn picky, a-typical.  But that is one thing that Larry and I have together, being a-typical.  As his mom always says, "you guys just like weird stuff."  And she's right.

We found ourselves unsure of what to do at times.  When we went to cut the cake, we stood behind it and looked at each other realizing that we never asked how we cut the cake, after debating silently to ourselves, I blurted out "can someone tell us what we are supposed to do", my cousin in law, Niki, came to our rescue.  But once we got it cut, we couldn't separate it from the cake, so I just scooped out a clump to feed to my new husband.

The jazz band was great, thanks for pushing it Larry!  It added a classy, relaxed feeling to the soiree.  It was so great to see everyone again, I wished I could've spent more time individually with people.  The whole reception was just what we wanted.  It all worked out so nicely. The strange thing, is that looking back on it, it all seems surreal.

Recently Married, oh so happy!

Married 7/31/04

After four long years of denying that we were in love, we got married.  As our M.C. John said at our reception, be careful who you choose for a roommate, you could end up married!
